'The Scratch Card'
The New Hertford Film

Why Now?
Times are very difficult now for many people.
Many people are struggling these days and most would love the idea of a windfall.
Unfortunately, many people become addicted to gambling in the hope that this may change their lives.
The characters and their diversity are typical of many young people growing up in the UK today. The film explores themes of abuse, loss and bullying, and yet shows that through pure determination, many people can change their fortunes.
This is a ‘finders-keepers-losers-weepers’ film, filled with charm, and excitement and adventure for these young girls, as they attempt to turn their lives around through the misfortune of somebody else.
The film also highlights the dangers of addiction: with drug-use and gambling on the rise in these difficult financial times.

Gambling
cultural, social and political aims
The Scratch Card approaches and explores subjects like abuse, addiction and gambling. In exploring these social issues through the medium of film, we are opening up the conversation to explore them without the stigma that is often attached to them - as well as providing information on where viewers can find support if they or someone they know are affected by the issues explored.
The character ‘Derek’ is presented as a kind man who unfortunately got stuck on a path that led him to rely on drugs and alcohol and then he become addicted to gambling. This is not a farfetched circumstance and is unfortunately something that many people in the UK and worldwide are experiencing.
The film can play a crucial role in shedding light on gambling harm and mitigating societal stigma. By portraying the challenges faced by a character grappling with this specific form of addiction, the film has the potential to humanise the issue, fostering empathy and understanding among audiences.
This narrative choice allows viewers to witness the complexity of gambling harms, moving beyond stereotypes and acknowledging the diverse factors that contribute to addiction. Furthermore, the film can prompt discussions about the broader implications of gambling, encouraging individuals to recognise it as a serious public health concern. By challenging stereotypes and sparking conversations, the film can contribute to reducing the stigma associated with gambling harm, ultimately fostering a more compassionate and informed societal approach towards those affected by these issues.
